Real Estate Broker Student FAQs

Do I need 90 college credits to apply for the Ohio Broker exam?

No, Ohio no longer requires 90 college credit hours for a broker’s license.
What courses are required for the Ohio Broker application?

Broker candidates must complete four 30-hour courses:

  • Financial Management
  • Business Law
  • Human Resource Management
  • Business Economics

In addition, they must complete 20 hours of Finance and 20 hours of Appraisal to apply.

What if a student takes the new 10-hour Finance and 10-hour Appraisal courses and later wants to apply for their Broker’s license?

If a student has taken the 20-hour versions of Finance and Appraisal, no additional hours are needed for broker licensure.
If a student has taken the 10-hour versions, they must complete an additional 10 hours each in Finance and Appraisal before applying for a broker’s license.

The additional 10 hour versions of Finance and Appraisal courses for brokers will be available in 2027. Anyone who applies for a broker’s license prior to 2027 will have taken the 20 hour versions of the course. Agent must be licensed for 2 years before applying for a broker’s license.
Most broker applicants will not be affected until 2027, since most current students have taken the 20-hour courses.

How do the new certificate courses work?

  • Each course is 30 clock hours
  • 6 months to complete from date of purchase
  • Available online and self-paced
  • Start anytime
  • Certificate of completion emailed within 1 hour of finishing each course

Can I submit a mix of transcripts and course certificates?

Yes. Submit any documentation that proves completion of the required courses.
Do the certificate broker courses prepare me for the exam?

No. The four 30-hour broker courses are not exam preparation courses.
Can I take Broker exam prep before completing the broker courses?

Yes. Broker Foundations and Broker Review can be taken at any time.

How to Get Your Real Estate Broker License in Ohio

Ohio State Required Broker Pre-Licensing Hours: 120 hours

Hondros College Ohio Course Hours Offered: 120 hours in one of the Hondros Broker Packages

Step 1: Meet the Ohio Broker License Requirements

  • Hold an active Ohio salesperson license for two (2) of the last five (5) years.
  • Complete 20 Real Estate Transactions as described in the Broker License Requirements.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or a crime of moral turpitude. Not have violated any civil rights laws regarding real estate within the past two years as determined by a court of law or violated any rules of the Ohio Division of Real Estate. In some circumstances, it is possible to have a conviction or violation disregarded, which would allow you to sit for the exam. The Division may only make a determination with respect to a conviction or violation if you file an application. For additional information on this process, contact the Division directly or review the additional information found on the Division’s website.

Step 2: Complete the approved 120 hours of pre-licensing education at Hondros College.

Step 3: Prepare and study for the broker exam with the Hondros College Broker Exam Prep Package.

Step 4: Submit your Broker Examination Application & pay the application fee.

Step 5: Complete your fingerprint-based background check at Hondros College or any Fast Fingerprints location statewide.

Please Note: The Ohio Division of Real Estate requires real estate applicants to have their fingerprints processed for background checks within ten days after filing their application. If you have completed a background check prior to submitting your application, please call the ODRE at 614-466-4100 to review your status.

Step 6: Schedule your State License Exam & pass with 75% or higher.
