The Hondros Story: Born From a Cram Session
In 1981, John G. Hondros — a lawyer and real estate professional — noticed the same problem showing up in classroom after classroom: people who understood real estate were still failing the state exam, because no one was teaching them how to take it.
So he built a crammer: a focused, one-day review session with a single job — get people ready to pass. It worked, word spread, and the crammer became a business, The Ohio Real Estate Preparatory School.
When Ohio changed its licensing regulations in the early 1990s and required real estate schools to operate as accredited institutions, that crammer grew into Hondros College — a full pre-licensing school built on the same founding obsession: results, not seat time.
Forty-five years later, that obsession hasn’t changed. More Ohio real estate agents have started their careers at Hondros than at any other school, and our Pass or Don’t Pay guarantee — included with our Ultimate package — is a direct descendant of that very first cram session: we don’t consider the job done until you pass.
Still First, Not Just Oldest
That same instinct to go first showed up again in 2016. Seeing the opportunity for online courses, Hondros worked closely with regulators to build an online program that supported the high expectations for quality and education standards, while making coursework more flexible for busy students to access and complete. Every online and livestream option Ohio agents rely on today traces back to that first yes.
