How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Ohio

1. Complete 4 Courses of Approved Pre-Licensing Education

To get your Ohio real estate license you must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and successfully complete 120 hours of approved real estate education at an institution of higher education. This real estate education must consist of the following:

  • Real Estate Principles and Practices (40 hours)
  • Ohio Real Estate Law (40 hours)
  • Real Estate Appraisal (20 hours)
  • Real Estate Finance (20 hours)

All these courses can be completed online or at one of our campuses located around the state. You can even mix and match online and classroom! We offer flexible course options so no matter your schedule, your courses can be completed at your convenience.

Not sure where to start? No worries! Sign up for one of our Open House events at a convenient campus near you and learn more about a real estate career. You’ll be able to ask any of your unanswered questions, tour the campus, meet the instructors and staff, and mingle with other students and real estate professionals. An enrollment specialist will be available on-site to help get you started in a new career.

2. Select Your Sponsoring Broker

Before you can apply to become a licensed real estate agent in Ohio, you must be sponsored by a broker. We offer career nights to help you with networking. You will be able to meet with hiring companies, learn about your local market, and speak with brokers about everything that is happening in your industry!

3. Submit Your Application

You must submit a completed Salesperson Examination Application, pay the fee, and submit proof that you have completed your education requirements (like your certificates of completion from Hondros College) to the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing. Once the division has received your information they will process your application and send your information to the testing vendor. Please Note: The Ohio Division of Real Estate now requires real estate applicants to have their fingerprints processed for background checks within ten days after filing their application. If you have completed a background check prior to submitting your application, please call the ODRE at 614-466-4100 to review your status.

4. Schedule & Pass Your Test

After your application has been processed, you will receive a Candidate Information Bulletin with instructions for scheduling your test.

Utilizing your exam prep tools is an essential step to ensuring that you pass your exam-the first time. We recommend taking the live Real Estate Sales Crammer Review During the Crammer course, you will learn test taking tips and how to prepare for the exam, as well as taking a mock exam that simulates the real thing. You’ll also want to continue your exam preparation with our renowned CompuCram® Exam Prep software.
