Steps to Licensure

Step 1

Pre-licensing education requirements

You must complete a pre-licensing course prior to taking an Kentucky Insurance exam as required by the Kentucky Department of Insurance. Here are the required hours that must be completed prior to taking your exam and obtaining your license:

  • Life and Health – 40 hours
  • Life Insurance – 20 hours
  • Health Insurance – 20 hours
  • Property and Casualty – 40 hours

All our online courses are approved with the state of Kentucky. Once you review all sections of this course and complete all Pre-License Certification Exams with a minimum score of 70%. You will need your certificate to register for your exam.

You must take this certificate with you to the exam, or you will not be admitted to sit for your test.  Your course completion certificate will be good for one year from the date of your completion of this course.

Step 2

Pass your licensing exam

Exam Fee: Each exam is $50.

Schedule Exam: Kentucky Insurance exams are registered for through eServices. Candidates will not be able to create an eServices account until the Department has their initial application. To create an eServices account visit https://insurance.ky.gov/eservices/default.aspx. Candidates creating a new account will click on “First time here” to set up the account. When the online account reads “pending examination” candidates will be able to schedule their exam online. For questions regarding the exam registration process, candidates should contact the Kentucky Department of Insurance at (502) 564–6004 or visit them online at http://insurance.ky.gov/.

Passing Score Required: 70%.

Step 3

Apply for License/Get Fingerprinted

Apply for License: Candidates will need to complete their pre-licensing education, apply for their license through NIPR, and apply for their criminal background check before registering for the exam.  To submit the electronic license application, visit www.nipr.com and select resident initial license application.  To submit the criminal background report, visit http://kcoj.kycourts.net/PublicMenu/Default.aspx?header=AOC+FastCheck. Candidates can then track their application status and schedule their exam through an eServices account.

Getting Fingerprinted: The state of Kentucky does not require candidates to get fingerprinted as part of the licensure process.
