How to Become an Insurance Agent in Ohio

1. Complete your Required Education

To get your Ohio insurance license you must successfully complete 40-hours of insurance education either in the classroom or online.

Choose between Property & Casualty, Life & Health, Life only, Health only or personal lines.

2. Background Check

Successfully complete a fingerprint-based background check.  For your convenience, you can do so at all Hondros College locations through FastFingerprints.

3. Course Completion

Once you’ve met your pre-licensing education requirements, you’ll be issued a course completion certificate.  The state requires you to present an original copy of this certificate at the test location. Course certificates are valid for 180 days from the date of completion.

4. Exam Preparation

Register for the state exam at www.psiexams.com or by calling 855.807.3995.

5. Pass the Exam

Bring an original of your certificate and a photo ID to the test location.  You’ll pass the exam, armed with the industry knowledge necessary to help you sell insurance products and services to the public.

6. Submit Your Application

Immediately after passing the exam, apply for your insurance sales license either at the test center or at www.insurance.ohio.gov.
